Nesting - 12/17/2006

Courtesy of Decoder Ring:

The third print from the Decoder Ring Art Print Series is by Aaron Horkey of Burlesque of North America. Aaron was joined by Burlesque partner Wes Winship to pull this beauty off and a whopping 21 screens were used to do it.

This project is a collaborative effort between DRDC and a select group of nationally acclaimed designers, artists and creative thinkers. Each Print Series artist spends a week in the Decoder Ring Design Concern studio creating original art that is translated to a limited edition fine art serigraph.

Each print is a limited edition of 100, with only 80 available to the public. All prints are signed, numbered and embossed.

Commentary

Nesting is likely the most sought after print in the entire Aaron Horkey catalogue.  The print was produced in a low edition, released at a high initial price, and required a painstaking 21 screens to produce.  Without ties to a specific band or film and with fewer fantasy elements than most of Aaron's prints, the image has widespread appeal to go along with Aaron's remarkable linework and Wes' masterful printing.  Since release, the print has become increasingly difficult to track down in the aftermarket.

Those with sharp eyes will notice that the copy depicted here has a slight registration issue in one of the red layers (look at the edge of the red ink layer and how it doesn't quite match up with everything else in the image).  It's really only visible when extremely close, but is an interesting example of the challenges of screen printing an image this complex.

ISIS/Baroness - Pacific Rim Tour 2010

Via Mega Fauna:

ISIS with Baroness Australia/New Zealand/Japan tour poster, 2010. 12"X34", 3 impressions including split fountain and metallic gold on French paper. Blue/black version to be sold on tour only, green version available post tour.

Commentary

As noted above, the blue version was sold by the band during the tour, while the green version was sold online.  Also, not pictured, is a very limited "Pacific Rim Variant" edition which is printed on a slightly lighter shade of blue paper, and has copper metallic highlights instead of gold.  There are some excellent comparison images here.  The back of each print features a Gocco kana graphic, which I believe translates to "Black Osprey".  You'll see this detail in one of the pictures above.  Also, if you look closely, you'll notice that the copies on green paper are signed and numbered in gold pencil for improved contrast and to better match the print.  Blue copies are signed in normal graphite.  Also as a departure from the norm, these were printed by D&L screen printing, instead of Aaron's usual printer of choice, Burlseque.

From a collector's standpoint, the green version is the most readily available while both the variant and the tour edition are quite rare.  The tour edition went on sale beginning in New Zealand and was sold out by the first few shows in Australia.  Apparently, no copies even made it to Japan.  With the vast majority of the copies going to fans of the band rather than collectors, the tour edition is surprisingly difficult to track down.  While both versions of the poster are great, I would give the edge to the tour edition on blue.  The impact of the bird plunging through the swirling smoke is enhanced by the dark background of the blue version.
